How this will help

The number of feral cats is estimated to be as many as 100 million – a huge population that contributes greatly to the community of animals that end up being euthanized in shelters. Approximately one million feral cats enter shelters every year with ZERO possibility of adoption.

Spay and neuter of feral cats (TNR) can reduce the population sizes of feral cat colonies, but only when the number of new animals entering the population is limited. Therefore, we need to eliminate cat abandonment to reduce those animals that suffer. In honor of National Feral Cat Day on October 16, take our pledge to make a difference.

Here are actions that you can take to eliminate cat abandonment and reduce those animals that suffer and contribute to the feral cat population.

  • Report acts of abandonment to local authorities. Work with authorities to patrol cat dumping areas.
  • Support or create programs that work to keep animals in their homes, including pet food banks, behavioral training programs, or educating the public to the risks of abandonment and local laws.
  • Support local spay/neuter programs to reduce pet overpopulation or sponsor the spay or neuter for an animal on GetYourFix.org in your area.
