To: The communities, the survivors, and the families of the victims of the attacks in Peshawar, Pakistan and Nairobi, Kenya
We are writing to extend our deepest condolences to the people of Nairobi, Kenya and Peshawar, Pakistan as you deal with the tragic events of 21 Sept 2013 and 22 Sept 2013. We are members of the United Religions Initiative (URI), a global interfaith organization with over 600,000 members in 86 countries, and supporters and partners of Talking Back to Hate — a campaign that uses education and advocacy to combat hate speech, discrimination, and bullying.
We condemn the terrorist attack on the Christian community of Peshawar, Pakistan gathered for morning prayers at All Saints Church that killed 122 Christians and injured more than 150, including women and small children. Likewise, we condemn the terrorist attacks at the Westgate Shopping Centre in Nairobi, Kenya that killed 68 and injured more than 175 people, including innocent children. We collectively grieve with the survivors and the families of the victims, and offer them our prayers and moral support.
We ask what we can do to build more tolerance and respect for diversity in our communities, and mitigate the factors that drive violent extremism. We stand in solidarity with people across the world who are building bridges of trust and friendship across religious and cultural divides through collaborative action. We commit to act in the spirit of the Golden Rule as expressed by the world's religions: www.scarboromissions.ca/Golden_rule/sacred_texts_en.php.
As your communities come together to heal your wounds and continue grappling with the hard issues before you, please know that we are behind you with unwavering support and heartfelt prayers during this tragic time.
We offer love and prayers for peace from the URI community and partner organizations.

We wish to let the people of Peshawar, Pakistan and Nairobi, Kenya know that we stand committed to building bridges of trust and friendship across religious and cultural divides, to uproot the seeds of hatred that have led to such horrific violence. The letter will be distributed to the communities by URI regional coordinators in East Africa and Pakistan.
