We, the undersigned, are urging the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) Advisory Council to ban seismic airgun testing in the Monterey Bay.
Seismic airguns are used in offshore oil exploration. The airguns are towed behind ships and release intense impulses of compressed air into the water every 10 to 12 seconds, 24 hours a day for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. These blasts are 100,000 times more intense than the roar of a jet engine. The energy from the blasts is intended to search downward for evidence of oil and gas beneath the seafloor, however a significant amount of the energy travels outwards and can be heard from over 1,000 miles away from the site of testing.
Seismic airgun testing has been shown to disrupt behavior in endangered whales, turtles and fish populations. These animals can suffer temporary or permanent hearing loss and displacement. Airguns have been shown to dramatically depress catch rates by 40-80 percent of various commercial fish species including rockfish, a very important fishery in Monterey Bay (Skalski et al., 1996). Airgun surveying has also been known to cause hearing loss in Leatherback Sea Turtles (Piniak et al., 2012) and Humpback Whales (Ketten et al.,1993), both endangered animals who frequent the Monterey Bay.
For the protection of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary and the abundance of animals who visit this area, we hope that you will consider banning this harmful practice.
