Russ Girling, CEO, TransCanada

Dear Mr. Girling,

We’ve never actually met face to face, but I’m one of the millions of U.S. citizens your plans to develop the Keystone XL pipeline would personally affect. And I can’t let that happen.

There are many reasons, but they all come down to this: my family’s future can’t be a number on your balance sheet. From the wildfires ravaging California hills to the rising rates of childhood asthma, the devastating consequences of carbon pollution and climate change are becoming increasingly clear with each passing news cycle.

Keystone XL’s dirty tar sands oil would only make this picture worse. Plus, the resulting social costs could reach over $100 billion a year, according to an estimate by Oil Change International. It simply doesn’t make sense for anyone but oil executives.

We’ve heard about all the benefits Keystone XL would supposedly bring, but these claims just don’t add up. With the pipeline in place, government discounts disappear and gas prices rise by 20—40 cents/gallon, according to Consumer Watchdog. That’s about $440/year for the average Midwesterner. Not exactly cheaper gas.

We’d also be grateful if you’d stop pretending Keystone XL will be a real job creator. Because the State Department found the pipeline would likely have only a “negligible effect on the U.S. jobs market,” creating only 35 permanent jobs. And the energy security claims might hold water if the majority of the Keystone oil wasn’t destined for export overseas.

We know you’ve got millions to spend and armies of lobbyists and friends in Congress working hard on your behalf. But we’ve got the truth and we’re doing everything to ensure our friends, families, and representatives hear it.

So thanks for your time. You’ll be hearing more from us soon.

Signed,

The Climate Reality Project

If built, the Keystone XL pipeline would exponentially increase carbon pollution at a time when continuing extreme weather events, rising health impacts, and growing social costs highlight its devastating consequences for climate change.  President Obama has gone on record stating that he'll only approve the pipeline if it doesn't significantly contribute to climate change.  We need to let deniers like Russ Girling know the Keystone XL pipeline would be a catastrophe for the planet and that you are one of the millions of people using your voice to ensure our friends, families, and representatives hear it.  We're writing to remind him that we know the truth, and we'll stop at nothing to make sure everyone this pipeline will harm knows it too.
