In 2012 the Non-Human Animal Protection Society (NAPS) successfully lobbied the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) @ La Trobe University, Bundoora - to surrender 20 lambs. They were being used in an AEC approved second year Nutrition Practical, to Edgar's Mission.

ONLY possible due to the 1000+ people who signed the petition and wrote letters to the AEC.

In 2013, the practical is going ahead again and we have no assurance the lambs will not be slaughtered upon conclusion. Time is of the essence, as the practical is about to end.

As per section 1.13 of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th edition 2013: 'Death as an endpoint' must be avoided unless it is essential for the aim(s) of the project.

Despite an offer by Edgar's Mission to purchase the 20 lambs, the AEC have advised:

"the supplier will be buying back the sheep at the conclusion of the practical, and re-homing them at the farm from which they came".

NAPS' requests for the AEC:

  • assurance all 20 lambs will not be killed at the farm they are being sent to
  • assurance all 20 lambs will not be sent to slaughter from the farm
  • send all 20 lambs to Edgar's Mission - as was the case last year.
