We had the opportunity to interview for our documentary, Martin Teicher, MD, PhD who is a leading neuroscience researcher on early abuse and neglect and brain development. He has also studied the effects of harsh punishment on the brain. Harsh punishment was described as being spanked 12 times in a year, at least once with a spoon, belt, or some implement. He found that these children had alterations in brain development the same as children who suffered overt physical abuse.Spanking can alter brain development. Where is the cutoff between spanking is OK and spanking is dangerous?
