Sunday, September 22, 2013, the Maui Special Rodeo helps Maui's children with special needs enjoy a true, upcountry rodeo experience in a safe, fun, therapeutic environment. This year's event will be held at Piiholo Ranch, pairing cowboys, horses and child participants together for a day of fun! Real rodeo buckles, rodeo attire, gift bags and lunch will be provided for the kids. Held during the intermission of Piiholo Ranch's annual Cowboy Classic, the children will also get to witness some real rodeo action as their cowboy heroes compete during the day.

How the Maui Special Rodeo started:
In 2010 founder Cole Hendrickson, a champion roper with a love for horses and rodeo, developed the Maui Special Rodeo at 17 years of age, a part of his high school senior project. Cole's mission: to give Maui's special youth the rodeo experience.
"Last year I started volunteering at the Haku Baldwin Center's therapeutic riding program. I enjoyed it because it allowed me to spread my love for horses and riding with the kids. It opened my eyes to yet another way that horses transcend words, as I saw these kids with special needs connect with the animals. I decided to do the Maui Special Rodeo to introduce these exceptional children and young adults to the rodeo way of life and to all of my friends who rodeo with me here in our community. I think it will be a fun and awesome way to share the rodeo experience – firsthand. Young people and horses can be a great combination. I am looking forward to sharing my love for the sport with everyone who shows up and having a great time doing it." – Cole Hendrickson'
We thank Cole for his dedication to celebrating Maui's children with special needs and look forward to continuing the Maui Special Rodeo in 2013 and beyond. With support from the community and our hosts at Piiholo Ranch.
