The SA Government Dept of Health, Environmental Affairs & Home Affairs Legislation

In SA, the Births & Deaths Registration Act 51 of 1992 defines Stillbirth as a child that has had at least 26 weeks of intra-uterine existence, but showed no sign of life after complete birth.

Babies who die during the first 26 weeks of gestation, however, are currently being thrown away in red anatomical buckets as batches of common medical waste! Together with amputated arms & legs, tumors and other organs, they are then disposed of in an incinerator.

Parents who endure the loss of what they perceive to be their baby, who suffer miscarriage or stillbirth, Must have a CHOICE should they wish to bury or cremate their little ones.

When you lose a baby, you lose part of you - you lose the dreams you have for the baby, you lose your future!

It should not be judged as anything less than a loss...

Signed,

Sonja van Rensburg

How this will help

A fetus should not be disposed of in a pile of surgical body parts somewhere!

It won't take away the pain of miscarriage, but, the love we had for our little ones who never saw the light, did not...

A fetus should not be disposed of in a pile of surgical body parts somewhere!

It won't take away the pain of miscarriage, but, the love we had for our little ones who never saw the light, did not die when they died!

Families that are able to say goodbye in a dignified fashion, such as having a funeral ceremony, are better able to reach closure and heal through their grieving process. It would thus help them to come to terms with their loss!

Otherwise, it is like a missing child... You have no idea what happened to your loved one!

Please help me to ensure that other parents across the country receive compassionate treatment and be allowed to bury or cremate their little ones, should they so choose.

It's about a living 'baby' with a heartbeat!

Doesn't every baby deserve to be loved & respected the same way?

Sadly, they are not in our society...
