VIA Martyn StewartFor many weeks now a part of me has been keeping an eye on developments in Ely, Minnesota. Ely is the place where Dr. Lynn Rogers has been studying Black Bears for over 40 years. I have met and worked with Lynn for a few years now and have had the extreme pleasure of meeting the bears he and his assistance, Sue Mansfield have been studying face to face. Some of you may have seen the documentaries and live broadcasts over the last 4 years. Lynn Rogers studies have destroyed the myths about Black Bears and the image hollywood and hunting magazines have portrayed since time immemorial. Lynn's studies had to have a DNR permit, these permits allowed Lynn to attach GPS collars to the animals. The GPS collars allow Lynn to track and monitor all movements that these animals make. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have been at loggerheads with Lynn for many years, Mainly because they don't want the publicity that Lynn has created from these studies, Lynn has succeeded where no other biologist has even come close to in monitoring bear behavior. Lynn's facebook pages have over 148,000 visitors and countless visitors to his website. So this year, the DNR cancelled his permits with a bunch of lies to go with it. over 40 years of studies are to go out the window, All bears have to have their GPS collars removed at the end of July. These amazing animals like June and Lily will be destroyed come September in hunting season.Normally, the hunters would spare all radio collared bears but without these collars and rainbow ribbons that are tied to them during hunting season, they will be shot. Lynn pleaded his case to the Governor to no avail. His last chance is to take the DNR to court. This of course is expensive. The hearing is on Monday. I just spoke with Lynn on the phone and the normally cheerful up tempo man has emptiness in his voice. I ask that you take a look at the bear research website and try to make a donation to the cause. On a personal basis, my heart aches. To know that Lily, Faith, June, Big Harry, One-eyed Jack, Bo, Braveheart, Jewel and all of these animals that I have become fond of will be gone forever is a hard to imagine.
