Hello dear friends, and thank you for checking out my Birthday Wish!
For my birthday on July 31st, I'm asking my friends, family, and colleagues for a special gift: help me raise $1300 for COARE to "Put an END to shark fin soup."
I chose COARE as a recipient because it is deeply involved in a number of shark conservation efforts, and has helped pass a number of legislative bans of shark fins - including Washington, Oregon, California, Illinois, Maryland, Delaware, and New York.
COARE led the charge in Illinois (the State with the 3rd largest market in the U.S.!), and it was the only State to succeed in passing and enacting such legislation last year. Happily, that ban (along with California's) went into full effect earlier this month!
We're confident that if we had been able to be more deeply involved in other campaigns we would have seen more success on these other fronts. We've become quite good at this, and EVERY committee before which we've testified has voted overwhelmingly, if not unanimously, to support our proposed bans.
We need your help so that we may turn our efforts to other US States and Canadian Provinces, and so that we can continue to support the laws we've already fought to enact.
Please consider giving to my Birthday Wish, and together we can help put an end to the slaughter -- up to 73 million sharks are killed each year, many for their fins alone.
