Andrea Bailes was 14 years old, the baby sister of two older brothers. She was an eighth grader at Point Pleasant Jr High School, a member of her school's soccer team, and a member of Wyoma Pentecostal Church. She was also a gymnast at Southern Ohio Gymnastics Academy where she was a two-time state champion on uneven bars.
On Friday November 18, Andrea was on her way home from the movies with neighbors when a drunk driver crossed the center line only to hit their car head on, killing my daughter and leaving the other two in critical condition. Our lived were ruined forever. The driver had already been charged with nine previous DUIs.
Andrea was a child who never noticed age, race, color, she loved everyone and anyone. We always noticed how her smile would light up the room no matter what the circumstances were, after losing her we have heard many stories of how giving she was and how she influenced others lives. She was always looking for the good in everyone and wanted everyone to be happy. The decisions of one man and a legal system that failed us is the reason our world is completely torn apart.
Please sign our petition and help us fight for stricter laws to protect your family from enduring this pain and emptiness. This law would mandate drivers who cause death to another person while driving under the influence should be sentenced to life in prison. These laws will not change the outcome of our situation, it won't bring Andrea back, but it can prevent others from the heartbreak of losing a loved one.
You can help. Sign this petition to toughen DUI laws in West Virginia!
