Today, Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz joined with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Susan Collins, Senator Barbara Boxer and others in support of legislation that would create an independent and impartial justice system for military sexual assault cases and other serious crimes.
Senators Paul and Cruz join a growing bipartisan coalition in support of the Military Justice Improvement Act and fundamental reform to protect our men and women in uniform.
In a hearing last month, Senator Cruz said, "the lack of reporting [of incidents] is driven by a fear of not having an impartial third party outside the chain of command in which to report a sexual assault."
Senator Paul said today, "In the instance when one is accused of a serious crime, especially one of harassment or assault, the allegation needs to be taken seriously and conflicts of interest should not impact whether a crime is prosecuted properly."
Just last month, a Defense Department survey found that 62 percent of victims who reported assaults said they suffered retaliation.
Please join Protect Our Defenders in thanking both Senators Paul and Cruz for joining this bipartisan coalition that is advocating on behalf of all victims of military sexual assault.
Please call, email and tweet your senator and encourage them to support the Military Justice Improvement Act and the creation of an independent and impartial military justice system.
