Over 12,000 prisoners in California are in solitary confinement and many are subjected to this harsh and inhumane punishment for minor offenses. In a solitary cell - the room is 7 by 11 feet, and pitch black. If subjected to solitary confinement, prisoners are kept there for 22 hours a day and some have been there for over 10 years.
On July 8th, 2013 Prisoners around the state went on hunger strike for the second time in three years. The first strike started in 2011 and lasted for 30 days, only to end when the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) promised to make the proposed changes.
After the CDCR failed to follow through on their promise and end solitary confinement the first time, prisoners have taken up the hunger strike again for a second time. These brave activists have now surpassed 50 days without food.
As these prisoners continue to live without food, they need out help in demanding prison reform in the state of California.
Please sign this petition to urge Gov. Jerry Brown to honor the Pelican Bay Five Core demands. No human should be placed in solitary confinement.
