Mr. President, Honorable members of Congress:
Since the inception of the United States, our history has been shaped by the deeds of brave men and women. As a Nation we have always recognized the brave actions of our Heroes with the award of a medal and the gratitude of our Nation.
Recently our great country has seen three tragedies which our Government has yet to acknowledge. On December 24th, 2012 four members of the West Webster NY fire department responded to an alarm for assistance. As the first truck arrived, a deranged gunman laid in wait and began firing upon the defenseless firefighters killing two and wounding two. The gunman also wounded an off duty Greece NY police officer who has been credited for saving the lives of other responding units.
On April 17, 2013 in the city of West, Texas 11 firefighters from 5 departments answered their last call while attempting to save the lives and property of the citizens of West after a fertilizer plant caught fire. With little regard for their own safety they bravely went to fight the fire when an ensuing explosion tragically ended their lives.
On June 30, 2013 20 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot team answered the call in Yarnell Arizona. These brave men fighting a wildland fire suddenly found themselves cutoff when the wind changed. These heroes were attempting to save the town and structures that the fire was threatening. With little regard for their safety they stood their ground and 19 were lost when the fire changed direction.
We ask that President Obama and Congress authorize the award of the Public Safety Officers Medal of Valor to all these heroes. 5 from the West Webster Tragedy, 11 from West Texas, and 20 from the Granite Mountain Hotshot team.

As Americans we enjoy the safety and life that we do because of the selfless hours of service that our Firefighters, EMT and Paramedics, and Law Enforcement Officers put in to ensure our safety. When a member of the Uniformed Services is lost, it is a loss the effects each and every one of us in society. Because of their service we are able to enjoy the freedoms and activities that are important to each of us. We as Americans owe them the honor and recognition that these awards bestow.
