My name is Nick and I was born with one hand. I've always been treated fairly and I've never felt exploited or demeaned for having a disability. I'm one of the lucky ones. What Goodwill is doing to employees with disabilities could technically happen to me. Under the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), my employeer could legally pay me less because I type slow with one hand. Goodwill is using a loophole in this act to exploit workers and pay them pennies. However, just because it's "legal" doesn't make right!
Goodwill is paying disabled employees far below minimim wage. Records acquired by NBC from the Labor department show that Goodwill has paid employees with disabilities as little as 22¢ an hour. On the other hand Goodwill President and CEO Jim Gibbons brings in over $500,000 annually.
Goodwill has justified their actions by saying it is "legal" and that these employees would not be able to find any work if they were not being exploited by Goodwill. You can read the entire statement here.
Goodwill's mission states: "Goodwill works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work."
It's time Goodwill returns to its mission. Right now Goodwill is creating the barriers it claims to break down and weakening the communities it claims to strengthen. It has to stop now. Tell Goodwill to treat ALL of their employees with the dignity of an equal workplace.
