We urge you, City-Parish Councilman Andy Naquin, to withdraw your proposed ordinance to limit which flags can be flown on government property in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Government property consists of parks and recreational areas where public gatherings are held regularly. This is an issue of Lafayette citizens' constitutional right to freedom of speech.

Lafayette City-Parish Councilman Andy Naquin recently announced his intention to offer an ordinance to ban anything except for government flags, and maybe Mardi Gras flags, flown on government flag poles. Naquin's plan is a direct reaction to a veteran's complaint about the flying of a rainbow flag in a city park. This citizen stated that the flag was "a poke in the eye of a way of
Lafayette is a vibrant and proud
city, and so are its LGBTQ citizens. We all stand together in support
of equality and free expression for everyone. We feel like resolutions such as Mr. Naquin's attempt to
further marginalize us and others, and limit our right to visiblity
This 1st Amendment issue is not only important to
the LGBTQ community here in Lafayette, it is important to the entire community of Acadiana. It is also
important in a larger sense that we do not allow this type of
disguised intolerance to go unseen or uncontested.
Since Councilman Naquin's comments, various media outlets- both local and national- have picked up the story. Discussions about the constitutionality of such a proposal are now taking place in Lafayette, across the state, and the nation.
