Hi my name is John Poul Pelaez and I am 27 years old. On April
13, 2012 I was involved in a motorcycle accident which ended up completely
changing my life. One of the most favorite things that I liked to in this world
was to ride my motorcycle. Riding it was an activity that gave me such a relaxing
feeling. One day
while riding on the way home an accident occurred when a 16 year old driver
struck me with his car. This one incident changed everything in my life in an
instant. I see myself a very careful rider and very conscious that
motorcycle are considered a risk, so I always wore a helmet and can proudly say
that it ended up saving my life.
The injuries I sustained were severe enough to require me to be airlifted to St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa Florida. The accident caused a severe brain injury which placed me in a coma for almost 4 weeks. My T3 vertebrae was crushed which caused tremendous damage to my spinal cord. I found out that the injury left me paralyzed from the chest down. I was released from ICU and then transferred to Tampa General hospital to begin the rehabilitation process; not only was I to do physical and occupational therapy but also speech therapies due to the traumatic brain injury I suffered in addition to the Spinal Cord Injury. Even though the medical prognosis was bad with almost no hope in the beginning, I progressed quickly through the healing process in a minimal amount of time which I can truly give thanks to God and the amazing support of my loving family as well.
Despite this tragedy, I have a lot of strength, determination and optimism to walk. I will never give up, and I always will be very determined to do whatever it takes to get my life back. Every day I take a step closer to regaining the very healthy and active life that I desire.
I had my career as a Fashion Merchandiser, and also worked in a very prestigious store in Tampa, but in a blink of an eye it was all gone. Life has been really hard to understand the way it is now, because in my mind it's very difficult to comprehend how everything I had before could just disappear and turn into a nightmare in a split second. I used to go the gym every day, I enjoyed life, I loved taking care of my body, mind and spirit. I didn't drink or smoke and loved hanging out with all my friends and family.
My parents found Project Walk as a hope for my rehabilitation, an innovative, specialized exercise-based spinal cord injury recovery center, This center gives me the support, hope and motivation that I need to continue the fight to make my life better and gain the strength to one day make my dream come true of walking again . Unfortunately and sadly, insurance does not pay for it, so I have been getting donations from my family and friends to help with my therapy, but I really need more funds to achieve my greatest recovery potential.
contribution makes such difference in my life...I truly appreciate your help
and thank you all.
