Please pass a Food and Farm Bill that supports health and sustainability.
States should have the right to regulate food and farming. Please don't take those rights away.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) should be banned, restricted, or at least labeled.
Food from factory farms should be labeled. As a first step, please support the Egg Bill that would let consumers know if the eggs they are buying are from "caged hens," "hens in enriched cages," "cage-free hens," or "free-range hens."
Agriculture is a significant contributor to climate change, especially plowing up new cropland, which releases millions of tons of CO2 in the United States every year. Please oppose farm subsidies that encourage farmers to destroy carbon-sequestering forests, prairies, wetlands and wildlife habitat.
The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) was supposed to improve air quality, protect clean water and develop healthy soil. Ironically, most EQIP money goes to factory farms to construct massive manure lagoons. EQIP funding should be reserved for farm projects that actually have environmental and food safety benefits, like reducing the use of pesticides and antibiotics and making the transition to organic.
The Farm Bill's nutrition programs are means-tested. Its agriculture subsidies should be, too. Farm Bill money should go to hungry families and working farmers in need, not rich farm owners!
Industrial hemp products sold in the U.S. – valued at $11.5 million in 2011 – should be grown in the U.S. Please lift the ban on industrial hemp cultivation.
Thank you for your consideration of these important issues as Congress continues its work on the Farm Bill.
