Pennsylvania Public School Employee Retirement Board

I am a 60-year-old, recently retired teacher living in Pennsylvania. When it came time to retireI initially agreed to a retirement payout of monies per month. I later realized that I could  modify the terms of the payout as specified in a letter that I was told was mailed to me at a temporary address. I never received this communication from PSERS and, thus, was denied a fair opportunity to make changes.

Later I was subsequently informed that the grace period for changing the terms of my payout has expired. Why should I be denied access to funds that I spent over 20 years working hard for?.

The currently monthly retirement payout is not sufficient for me to secure permanent housing and pay for my current medical expenses. Consequently, I am petitioning you to re-open my case, and permit me, because of these circumstances, to change my payment option so that I can secure enough monies from PSERS. Without this adjustment, I am trapped in an impossible situation:  homeless, without the means to get adequate medical care for my Diabetic syndrome. I fear that if my situation continues this way much longer, it could end with my death.

Thank you for considering my request.

How this will help

Do you support the right of workers to have access to the pension they have worked for and earned as well as to be able to have the ability to control their  own  hard earned monies? Do you...

Do you support the right of workers to have access to the pension they have worked for and earned as well as to be able to have the ability to control their  own  hard earned monies? Do you believe that everyone should have access to paperwork sent to them in a timely manner, and to have the ability to  have medical care as well as a permanent place to reside? If so, please support my administrative appeal to the Pennsylvania Public School Employee Retirement Board.

I am asking that they permit me to review the change options and allow me to choose the options that best fit my circumstances. I would like to have a period to review my options with a professional, as I need to understand fully what my options are, and I never received the change notice to make changes to cover my expenses. I would like to make an informed decision which would allow me to cover all of my expenses.

Out of all fairness, I never received the change notice; I would like to exercise my right to review and to choose a different option because the $1,000 monthly retirement payout is no longer sufficient for me to cover all my expenses.

I am currently homeless and struggling to afford medical coverage for my Diabetic syndrome. If PSRE granted me a different payment option it would allow me to secure a permanent place to live and adequate medical care.

Thanks for your support.
