Israel Shamir is an
internationally acclaimed radical spiritual political writer and during his
recent trip to east Jerusalem, he caught up with Israel's Nuclear Whistle
Blower, Mordechai/Moti Vanunu just a few days after Israel officially renewed
the restrictions denying him the right to leave the state and have "a job, a
home, a family" instead of continuing to make headlines.
Shamir reported for Komsomolskaya Pravda, "Vanunu's request to have Israel revoke his citizenship was denied [this year] because he has no other citizenship.
"Vanunu asked me to check with the Russians whether they would accept his request for asylum and grant him Russian citizenship.
"He told me, 'I do not know any secrets, since then many years have passed, I just want to leave here forever…I would like to receive Russian citizenship, and leave for Moscow.'
"Vanunu's life in Israel is hard; he cannot find work, he cannot move within the country without permission and he has been under supervision and surveillance for the last ten years.
"Vanunu tells me that some people still scream 'Traitor' when they see him!
"But I see Moti Vanunu; a modest, little, aged, hard as flint man and one of the heroes of our time.
"He walks around east Jerusalem and goes to churches and monasteries for prayer and service. As hard as his life is, Vanunu still does not regret that he tore the veil of secrecy from the Israeli nuclear arsenal.
"Yet the Israeli authorities continue to refuse to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of nuclear weapons, they refuse to let the commission of the IAEA in Dimona and other sensitive sites - although they demand the most stringent conditions of the NPT against other countries." ###
In this message from Mairead Maguire she mentions a few reasons WHY Vanunu is denied the right to leave Israel
In "Mordechai Vanunu's FREEDOM of SPEECH Trial and My Life as a Muckraker 2005-2010" I detail more reasons-such as SECURITY'S vendetta against Vanunu for exposing their lax security at Dimona and for some people- he committed the 'unpardonable sin' of becoming a Christian.
Important to note that on September 23, 2008, the Jerusalem District Court announced: "In light of (Vanunu's) ailing health and the absence of claims that his actions put the country's security in jeopardy, we believe his sentence should be reduced."
In 2010 Israel sent Vanunu back to solitary confinement for 78 days essentially for speaking to foreign media in 2004!
In light of the change in Vanunu's visage from when I first met him in 2005 and last saw him in 2009 to the attached photo by Israel Shamir; it looks to me as if Vanunu has been doing hard time in Jerusalem waiting for his right to fade into the world.
