The New York Times just reported that Senator Carl Levin may remove a critical measure from the defense spending bill -- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's Military Justice Improvement Act.
Nearly one-third of the Senate, 28 Democrats and Republicans, have signed on as co-sponsors in support of the bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Gillibrand, Senator Susan Collins, Senator Barbara Boxer, and many others.
If Senator Levin removes this measure, he will keep prosecution of sexual assault cases within the chain of command.
As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who presided over last week's Senate hearing, Levin has the power to kill Gillibrand's bill -- unless we act today.
If Levin kills the Military Justice Improvement Act, he will keep this outrageous status quo.
To end 26,000 unprosecuted sexual crimes a year, we need real reform. We need to take the decision to prosecute military sexual assault out of the chain of command.
You can also call Sen. Levin today at (202) 224-6221
When the phone is answered, let them know: "I support the Military Justice Improvement Act, and I don't want Levin to kill the bill."
26,000 rapes and sexual crimes are unreported every year by our sons and daughters in uniform.
