Mayor of Jersey City, Jersey City Council Members

Mr. Mayor and elected Council Members,

Jersey City officials have an opportunity to landmark St. John's Episcopal Church. Located at 120 Summit Avenue at Gardner Avenue, we strongly encourage the Council to recognize St. John's Episcopal Church's eligibility for listing in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places both for its architectural significance and also for its place in Jersey City's social history.

We the people of Jersey City and its neighboring towns implore you to take action to help grant the former St. John's Episcopal Church historic landmark status. St. John's has been at this location for 143 years and has served wealthy and working class families of the Bergen Hill and McGinley Square communities for well over a century.

While there is no longer an Episcopalian influence in the community, I and many residents believe that the building could serve the present community (once it has been stabilized and repaired) in other ways (e.g. community center for youth and/or elderly, a visual or performing arts center) while maintaining the historical significance of the former church.

Losing this building will also endanger the eligibility of the entire Bergen Hill Historic District. The Bergen Hill District has long been recognized as eligible for listing in the New Jersey and National Registers, and Saint John's Episcopal Church is an important contributing building in that district.

Please help secure this beautiful structure by taking the necessary steps to help this building become designated as a historic landmark.
