Minister for Employment, Mark Hoban.
There are thousands of people living in the UK with long-term illnesses and disabilities who are unable to go out to work, but want to work. People who want to continue living as normal a life as they can. These people often face poverty as they lose their jobs due to illness, and with the many restrictions on sickness and disability benefits including assessments even deeming some of these people who are unable to go out to work actually fit for work, adjustments to the current employment system need to be made.
For one, the Equality Act 2010 only mentions conditions such as MS, Cancer and HIV/AIDS with regards to rights and we would like reasonable adjustments to be made to include conditions such as Lupus, M.E. and Fibromyalgia, and other long-term health conditions, which can be totally debilitating, rendering sufferers with severe pain, constant fatigue, repeated infections from immune system disorder, neurological, cognitive problems and even some with severe mobility problems.
Many of these people are housebound by their conditions and unable to go out to work, despite what some of these assessments may deem, and so we are campaigning for the equal right for those with long term and debilitating conditions and disabilities to work remotely, from home for employers. Earning a regular and normal salary without their illness standing in the way of their livelihood. Many jobs can be done from home including: Accounting, Secretarial, Graphic Design, Marketing, Web Design; these are just a few examples.
We want it to be made a legal right and a compulsory action for employers to give remote workers the opportunity to work from home doing jobs that can be done via a computer or telephone. It would cut time off sick, allow people who still have the qualifications, skills and abilities to do their jobs to continue with their jobs in the event of illness. It would prevent job losses and prevent poverty to sufferers of illness. Therefore there should be the equal opportunity available for workers to continue with their jobs from home if they are physically able in the event of illness, and for people to apply for positions within the workplace that can be done remotely.

There are so many people who are unable to go out to work due to long term health conditions/disabilities yet want to work; who want their lives back but are too unwell to leave their homes, but they still have skills and abilities that they can use if they could do their jobs from home. And if it became compulsory for employers to give remote workers the equal opportunity to be employed by them doing jobs that can be done from home, livelihoods would not be lost. It would mean that those who become long-term sick would have the chance to still earn a living and lead a normal life, and not be placed into poverty or face being refused benefit.
