Please help us fund a shelter in Albania by signing this petition. Albania's dogs, cats and other animals (including its wild animals) are trapped, shot, poisoned, tortured and abused on a regular basis, every season. Or they are abandoned at birth and thrown alive in garbage cans, canals, or left in desolate areas, in trash bags, etc. The few people organized to address this behavior and to counteract this massive cruelty (under Animal Rescue Albania) can do little without our help, as they have no funding and are neither recognized nor aided by the Albanian government. This is because animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment are generally condoned by most Albanian individuals as well as by most town mayors; and stray animal massacres are freely conducted each year by individuals as well as by municipalities themselves for the purpose of increasing tourism in Albania and making it acceptable to foreign visitors. This--as most foreign visitors themselves have realized--is the wrong way to increase tourism in Albania and make it pleasing to their eyes. The goal must be to really improve the country from within by improving the condition of its animals--by way of enforcing laws and holding citizens accountable as well as by funding animal shelters. All this must begin by holding the Albanian government and all its municipalities responsible for applying the animal protection laws to which they subscribe ONLY on paper.
In order to help support, in order of priority:
-the funding of an animal shelter in Tirana (and hopefully other cities too)
-free veterinary training
-free spay/neuter programs for abandoned as well as owned dogs and cats
-increased regulation of and oversight over the number and conditions of pet shops and animal breeding businesses in the country
-enforced laws regarding the humane treatment of pet shop animals most of whom are kept in terrible conditions
-the radical improvement of the conditions of animals in the shameful Tirana Zoo, or its closing and the transfer of exotic animals to other, more humane nations.
-increased regulation over the exploitation of national parks and forests for the purpose of protecting Albania's exceptional fauna, most of which is highly endangered by illegal or otherwise condoned exploitation of the environment.
