Dear Mister President of the European Council,
Dear Mister Herman Van Rompuy,
As a fellow European citizen, I am deeply concerned about the future of our continent. I myself am thirthy four years old and I was born and still living in Belgium. I have got a job, a house (on credit), many friends and family. I’m living on the bright side, feeling very prosperous in Europe. But, as many of my fellow citizens, especially in the Southern and Eastern parts of the continent, I am indignant.
Europe is not only the privilege of politicians, businessmen, bankers, governments or institutions. I truly believe that Europe is a shared responsibility of all Europeans. We the people are the 99%. We the people are Europe. We the peopleshould become the engine of a new participatory European democracy. A new democracy that allows us, the people, to build a new European dream.
A democracy that allows us to take responsibility and to become the change. European politicians and the European institutions should enable active citizenship by developing and experimenting with new forms of more direct and interactive democratic processes, like the ‘G1000’ in Belgium, the ‘Constitutional Council’ in Iceland or the ‘We the Citizens’ initiative in Ireland. Only by using new forms of partnerships and collaboration between all levels ofgovernment, civil society and businesses, the equitable power relationships in our European democracy will recover. This seems the only way to build a new, legitimate European democracy that satisfies the true needs and values of the 99%.
2013 is the European Year of Citizens. This year is dedicated to the rights that come with EU citizenship. During this year, the European Union will encourage dialogue between all levels of government, civil society and businesses. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. That is why I invite you, the President of the European Council, for a personal conversation. How deep is the ocean? How far is the moon? More direct democracy isn’t impossible. Let’s join forces. It’s time to change things, time to build a true European Union together. Let’s start now!
I think I can change it.
I think I can help.
I know that together we can
