Dear Governor Snyder:
We are writing in opposition to any attempt to deregulate acupuncture in Michigan. Acupuncture is an important part of the comprehensive treatment of many medical conditions. It is important for the safety of the public that acupuncturists meet specific qualifications and competency standards before they are able to practice. At the time the legislation was passed creating registration for qualified acupuncturists, 41 other states already provided this form of consumer protection – either by licensure or registration - to guard against the unsafe practice of acupuncture. Now, it is our understanding that every state provides some form of regulation for the practice of acupuncture.
Acupuncture is used by millions of individuals across the United States as an effective complementary medical therapy. For example, acupuncture has been proven to be effective in the relief of postoperative dental pain and arthritis. The American Cancer Society supports its use to ease nausea caused by chemotherapy treatments and surgical anesthesia. With the increased use of acupuncture as a viable medical therapy it is imperative that consumers, health care facilities, and health benefit providers have some objective means of assessing the qualifications of the individuals providing the treatment.
I urge you oppose any effort to eliminate the safety measures put in place by the registration of acupuncturists. Thank you for your consideration of our views, and we look forward to learning of your position on this matter.
