The "Newsworthy Gnatcatchers" will be counting birds and raising funds for the publication, Michigan Birds and Natural History (MBNH), on Saturday, May 18, in the 25th Annual Southwest Michigan Team Bird-a-thon. Teammates this year include MBNH Managing Editor Jonathan Wuepper, Jack Reinoehl, and Tom Steele.

This is a friendly competition of more than 20 Michigan-based teams to find the maximum number of birds within Michigan's Berrien County.  Many of these teams are raising money for causes and organizations related to nature and birding.   The "Newsworthy Gnatcatchers" are seeking donations to help offset the cost of publishing and mailing Michigan Birds  and Natural History to birders across the state and beyond.

The mission of Michigan Birds and Natural History is to provide a forum for the publication of research on the natural history of Michigan, with a strong focus on birds and their habitats. Your donations will help Michigan Birds and Natural History and Michigan Audubon, a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization, continue long-standing citizen science projects, such as the Michigan Bird Survey and Michigan's Christmas Bird Counts. Michigan Birds and Natural History provides scientists and amateur naturalists a means to publish their sightings and research.

As a contributor to the team's efforts, you will receive:

  • A list of species seen by the team,
  • A summary of the team's day in the field,
  • The satisfaction of supporting Michigan's only ornithological journal!

(Be sure to send an email to jlutz@michiganaudubon.org so that we can share this information with you!)

Thank you for your support and dedication to further the understanding of bird life in Michigan!
