Braille writers are like manual typewriters for typing braille. Over the years we have been very fortunate to have so many braille writers donated to us. We use Perkins Braillers and they are very sturdy and long lasting machines. We do basic repair and maintenance on them but 6 of them require more care and expertise than we have. It will cost $50 or more to repair each brailler. These machines sell brand new for $900. For a fraction of this price we can repair braillers to prefect working order and get them out to the clients that need them.
Most children and adults never learn to use a slate and stylus (the equivalent of a pen and paper), to write down anything on paper they require a brailler. Using a braille embosser is very expensive and most people can't afford them or the special software required to run them. Our program allows clients a "life lease" on equipment which allows them to keep and use equipment until they no longer need it, it brakes, or they pass on. So far the only time we have received braillers back is because they need maintenance. This is how important the braillers are in the lives of our clients.
Please help us fix these wonderful machines that are so necessary to our clients lives and independence.
