Every volunteer is different and everybody has different expectations from their volunteer placement.
From 2nd July - 8th September, I am hoping to do volunteering programmes in Costa Rica & Nicaragua for 10 weeks which is run in both countries and Raleigh ICS takes place in Nicaragua only. By getting involved in one of Raleigh's volunteering projects in Costa Rica & Nicaragua, I will be helping to address some of these issues: Costa Rica:
- 30% of indigenous people can't read or write.§ Less than 60% receive a basic education, and only 9% have access to a secondary education
-The indigenous people living in the more remote areas have little access to health or educational services, inadequate water sources and no electricity
- Protecting and improving some of Costa Rica's beautiful variety of national parks, in order to conserve the country's world-class biodiversity.Nicaragua:
- 22% of the population are illiterate and 21% of the population don't have access to a safe water source§ Close to half (43%) of the people in Nicaragua live in rural areas. Two out of three people struggle to survive on less than US$1.25 per day
- Of the 5,500 homes in the Achuapa district (an area where Raleigh does a lot of work) 2,000 have no electricity, 1,800 have no access to clean drinking water and 1,200 are considered inadequate.
During my time in these countries, I will be implementing clean water projects, build schools and get involve in a variety of key projects such as reforestation, researching tree species/growth in tropical forests, building ranger stations, constructing bridges, building trails for wheel-chair users and create artificial reefs.
I am hoping to make a long-term impact in those communities. This opportunity will enable me to gain experience and learn about myself and face challenges. It will be an essential for my career prospectus particularly if I want to work in non-profit sector and it is a lifetime opportunity which will be in my memories and tell my kids.In order to achieve this, I need to raise £800 towards the funds of accommodation, food and living expenses. Raleigh International will also be contributing towards this cost of the expedition, so please donate whatever you can and help me to achieve this and remember that the value of life isn't measured by its duration but in its donation. Being good to people is building a bridge that you'll need at some point.
