Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency must use the powers it has been afforded to stop the spread of non-native species in this country. Due to the lack of laws and regulations surrounding this issue, non-native species continue to invade our ecosystems and outcompete the native species that have thrived for hundreds of years.

The National Invasive Species Act was allowed to expire in 2002 without any legislation to replace it. Foreign ballast water accounts for 72% of the invasive species found in the Great Lakes basin and 9 billions gallons of this water is dumped into domestic ports each year. The regulations laid out in this act must be put back in place before the Great Lakes are completely overrun. The ineffective Lacey Act has allowed non-native Burmese Pythons and Asian carp to enter our country and establish themselves within the ecosystem without prior screening. The Invasive Fish & Wildlife Prevention Act must be supported to stop this plague.

The environment is extremely delicate and these "foreign invaders" pose a real threat to upsetting and forever change the balance that has existed within these ecosystems for decades.  No one person can solve this issue, but with cooperation from every level of society progress can and will be made.
