This petition is being circulated to bring attention to and to evoke a radical change due to the growing number of incidences of the unjustified and unreported mistreatment of black/African-American people on public transportation (i.e., buses, planes, rail/train systems). It is also to address the disproportionate charges applied by the judicial system of administering only a misdemeanor for crimes of this sort.

While there have been many occurences of bus driver/passenger conflicts, the incident caught on video that gave birth to this petition was of a white bus driver brutally beating a black man for simply asking questions. The bus driver proceeded to drag the black passenge from the bus and left him in the middle of the street with no regard for his safety. Your child, father, brother, nephew or uncle, could be next. " Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" - Dr. Martin Luther King. Incidences like these do much to coerce a reciprocal violent response equal or worse than the original violent act towards the victim. This petition is a peaceful means to pursue and hopefully bring about a peaceful change. If we do not begin to address these types of incidences through petitions and other civil ways, it is foreseeable that American society could be in real danger of reverting back to the "eye-for-an-eye" violence and discord of the pre-civil rights era. Please sign this petition as your non-violent indication of your disapproval of the mistreatment, physical abuse, and stereoyping of black people or anyone else on public transportation. Also calling for stiffer charges/penalties for public transportation employees who perpetrate these crimes and make victims of fare-paying patrons who commute on public transportion systems..
