Autism Is An Urgent Public Health Crisis

As advocates & concerned citizens, we ask the Obama Administration and Health & Human Services to establish a Federal Autism Strategy aimed at delivering immediate & long-term solutions that include:

  • Reducing the number of individuals at risk of developmental regression, while increasing developmental progress and overall health outcomes in all individuals

  • Increasing access to appropriate healthcare, therapy, assistive communication technology, treatment, and resources

  • Providing a lead federal agency responsible for policy, implementation & oversight of programs

  • Providing Autism.Gov with easy access to multilingual and literacy-friendly information from federal, state, and local entities, and non-discriminatory resources covering a wide range of issues related to autism

  • Establishing a Presidential Task Force focused on developing prevention and treatment strategies; early screening & intervention; access to therapy, appropriate medical care & assistive communication technology; meaningful research; qualitative data; treatment & resource centers; age-out & job programs; adult services and residential care; abuse prevention & response; training programs for schools, social workers, respite workers, health care workers & first responders; peer programs & bullying prevention; family services, including sibling & caregiver support; suicide prevention; safety initiatives & resources; education & higher education assistance; full lifespan support; access to critical resources on all fronts; centralized, spectrum-wide online resources; long-term, measurable goals addressing this urgent public health crisis

The rate of autism has increased 78% since 2002. With the extreme shortage of resources, services and meaningful research, affected individuals will face devastating consequences, which will have a significant impact on society as a whole.

We need a full-time, dedicated federal effort - driven by a sense of urgency -  to meet the many needs of individuals on the autism spectrum.
