I will be participating in the Nation's Triathlon this September in Washington, DC. This will be my first attempt at ever doing a triathlon and part of this journey includes raising money for GREEN DOOR which is a not-for-profit that helps about 2,000 mentally ill people each year in the District toward their goal to live independently. I have always wanted to do something like this but never had a real incentive. My commitment to meeting my fundraising goal of $5,000 for the great work that GREEN DOOR does is just the motivation that I needed. I have gone from couch potato to gym rat in just the past couple months and determined to see this through in order to help GREEN DOOR members on their remarkable journey.

THE GREEN DOOR:
The Green Door is a organization that really touches home for my family. The work that they do with mental illness here in Washington, DC is truly remarkable and I am very proud that my mother - who many of you know - has been working with the Green Door for several years. Currently, the Green Door is the second largest center serving people with mental illness in Washington, DC and is recognized nationally as one of the most successful community-based mental health centers. Each year through the work of the staff and volunteers they are able to help around 2,000 men and women living with severe and persistent mental illness to lead independent and productive lives. The wide amount of services such as psychiatric, education, job, and housing support are what make the Green Door such an amazing resource for those suffering with severe mental illness.
My family has had its share of battles with mental illness which unfortunately is a medical condition that to this day most of us wish to ignore or not speak of. Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every
year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental
illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in 10
children across the United States. People living with mental illness need help and hope: they need a
community that supports them, their families and their recovery and this is just what the Green Door does.
