How this will help

Food Revolution Day is a global day of action for people everywhere to celebrate real food, where it comes from and how to cook it. It's a day to come together to keep cooking skills alive, improve our food knowledge and share it with others.

Learning how to cook is one of the most valuable skills you can ever learn. These skills used to be passed down from generation to generation but now millions of people lack even the most basic skills – as a result, it's costing millions of lives and billions of pounds to cope with the increase in diet-related diseases.

·  As cooking skills are declining so less people are cooking good, nutritious food, made from scratch (1).

·  Worldwide, 500 million adults are obese and more than 1.5 billion are overweight. By 2030, nearly 60% of the world's population could be obese (2).

·  Diet-related diseases are among the world's biggest killers (3). Physical inactivity and poor diet were responsible for 12.5 million deaths in 2010 (4).

We need to get back to basics and share our cooking skills and knowledge so everyone has access to good, nutritious food made from scratch.

Getting involved in Food Revolution Day can be as simple as hosting a potluck dinner and inviting friends to bring a secret ingredient of their choice, getting your school involved and teaching kids how to cook or hosting an educational activity such as planting their own fruit and vegetables seeds on the day, or bringing a blender to work and asking your workmates to bring some fruit and veg – get everyone involved in making smoothies and blending their own combinations.

Whoever you are and wherever you are, it's easy to get involved and help make a difference. Be sure to post your photos and recipes on and share them on social media with the tag #FRD2013.

Jamie Oliver's charities – the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation (JOFF) the Better Food Foundation (UK), and in partnership with our friends at The Good Foundation (AUS) – are all supporting Food Revolution Day.
