Sign the Petition to

Brampton City Council

I am aware of an initiative to have the City of Brampton be
designated a Bicycle Friendly Community as awarded by the Share the Road
Cycling Coalition.  I whole-heartedly support this initiative.

I understand studies indicate that bicycle for
transportation use in urban centres increases dramatically with investment in
cycling infrastructure and that these results apply even to cities in colder
climates. I think that many benefits, including: better health, reduced
obesity, reduced traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, would result from the city’s support for cycling as a low cost, low impact transportation
alternative for the car.

I believe that Brampton residents, from all parts of the
city, should have access to a safe, well signed, reliable and well maintained
network of bike lanes, paths, pathways and parking that will allow them to: run
errands, visit friends and commute to school or work by bike while leaving the
car at home.  I know the city has made investments in extending the multi-use pathway system along the city’s urban valley lands.  I would welcome additional development to support cycling along the east/west transportation corridors, better signage and signalling for bike routes, increased education and enforcement of cycling safety laws and promotion programs that would encourage more cyclists to ride instead of drive.

As one of the fastest growing cities in North America,
Brampton faces challenges in urban transportation that will become increasingly urgent.  I believe that investing in bike infrastructure today, as the city is being built, will be considerably less expensive than retrofitting it into tomorrow’s over-crowded roadways.  Being recognized as a Bicycle Friendly
Community would mean that the City of Brampton has a complete plan in place to support and encourage safe cycling throughout the city both now and in the future.

I encourage City Council to support the implementation of this initiative.

David Laing
