So as many of you may have heard, I am going to be playing a part in a non-profit organization called the Broadleaf Health and Education Alliance.
What is Broadleaf? Broadleaf is a presence within 7 rural villages and schools surrounding the Darjeeling area. The primary concentration of Broadleaf is to address and improve the vast challenges faced by the communities of the Eastern Himalayas. Neglected by volatile political situations, facing a stagnant economy, lacking basic infrastructure, and seeing failing educational and health systems, the Eastern himalayan communities are in dire need of aid that only few non-governmental organizations can provide.
That's where Broadleaf stepped in.
What Kind of Work Was Done? In its first year, they "completed 18 infrastructure projects (providing toilets, running water, building classrooms), taught 546 lessons on health and hygiene (nutrition lessons, germ theory, etc), and improved the well being of over 450 kids through health and vision screenings, deworming etc." Broadleaf is a grassroots campaign, only hiring Indian staff chosen from the community to be trained in health and education to best communicate Broadleaf's initiatives on a local level. The focus is on empowering the communities, through Broadleaf's technical expertise, resources, and educational background, to take care of their disadvantaged children.
So What Are We Doing? This Spring, 10 of us representing Broadleaf, will be making a 250 mile bike ride along the Eastern Himalayas from Darjeeling, India to Kathmandu, Nepal to raise awarenessand collect information on the developing issues facing the Eastern Himalayan region.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?!?Most of the budget from Broadleaf's operations this past year has been running off of donations received from last year's ride. That said, as riders we will be spreading awareness. However, we will merely be liaisons representing YOU who help donate. Help us to support Broadleaf and allow them to continue implementing comprehensive health and educational services to support new generations of children so they don't have to suffer the compounded problems of poverty and disease without a choice.
Every dollar you donate will go directly to Broadleaf, allowing school children to have access to clean drinking water, toilets, health education programming, de-worming intervention, wellness promotion, developmental and mental health screening, and a dedicated community health worker to provide basic health services within their communities.
