Petition for a Muskoka Act
TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO:
WHEREAS since October 2003, more than 17,800 direct jobs have been created or sustained in the north as a result of approximately 4,400 projects to which the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund committed more than $723 million which helped leverage another $2.4 billion from other contributors; and
WHEREAS on December 16, 2004, the Ontario government passed Bill 149. This omnibus bill amended the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Act to remove a reference to The District Municipality of Muskoka. This means that the citizens in Muskoka no longer qualify for the northern Ontario travel health grant. They don't qualify for incentives to bring physicians to their area. They no longer qualify for special road grants. They no longer qualify for funding under the $90-million-a-year Northern Ontario economic development program; and
WHEREAS on August 28, 2012 the Attracting Investment and Creating Jobs Act enacted programs worth $160 Million in Southern Ontario that are intended to support local companies that generate local jobs. Despite warnings the government unfairly excluded Muskoka from these programs; and
WHEREAS special measures are necessary to mitigate the impacts of 8 years of underfunding to the citizens of the district of Muskoka.
THEREFORE, we the undersigned petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows:
That the members of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario enact a Muskoka Act to provide special funding of $30 Million to fund infrastructure and economic development programs that help create jobs and attract investment in the district of Muskoka.
