According to the Center for Disease Control, on average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States. Nearly one in 4 women and one in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner at some time in their life. Victims of violence are significantly more likely to report physical and mental health problems than non-victims. Many times children also witness this violence and may act out their fears by hurting others or themselves. As adults, they are more likely to become victims of domestic violence or to become perpetrators themselves.
At Transitions Family Violence Services, we are the sole provider of comprehensive family violence services in Hampton, Newport News and Poquoson and we also co-provide resources to York County. Transitions' offers a host of services including a 24 hour hotline; emergency and transitional housing; support groups for adults, teens and children; safety planning and legal advocacy; information and referral services to partner agencies in the community; art and play therapy.
We are proud to offer all of these services at no cost to our clients. We have been very fortunate in the past to receive funding through grants, federal, state and city funding and generous donations from the community. Due to recent cuts in funding, Transitions has unfortunately been forced to scale back some of the services that we were previously able to offer to our clients. Donations and volunteers are a key component to maintaining our mission of building safe and healthy families on the Virginia Peninsula. Donations will go straight to programs that will assist women, men and children that have been victims of domestic violence.
