On 25/02/13 there was a fatal accident on the A31 in Ringwood in which 16 year old Jade Clark died on her red scooter in a multi-car pile up which resulted in the A31 and M27 being closed. A silver Volvo XC90 left the scene and is believed to be the vehicle responsible for killing Jade. The local council are using this to strengthen their petition to lower the speed limit on the road. However, we do not believe this is enough as there are too many examples of accidents like this happening due to drivers not being aware of scooters, mopedists and motorcyclists, not looking properly or being negligent, and while a large part of this is down to the driver, unfortunately a large part is due to the way drivers are trained.
We are calling for changes in the way that car drivers are taught about motorbikes and how to be aware of them, and we believe that all car drivers should have to ride a scooter or moped on the road for at least month before they are allowed to pass their driving test, to make them more aware of scooters, mopeds and motorcyclists on the road. There is no better way to make someone more aware of a scooter than by having them ride one and see what it's like for themselves.
