With the United State’s debt standing at over $16 trillion dollars, as college students, we owe about $52,000 before we begin to even start working. The nation’s financial burden will be passed to down to your children, and your children’s children, or more specifically to us.
As students of the University of Virginia with significant stakes in the future finances of our country, we recognize that we can no longer remain complacent with the current fiscal situation. With the help of the Up to Us nationwide campaign, we have taken the initiative to learn more about our nation’s fiscal situation and how we can help: we have heard Senator Warner speak on the national debt; we have attended our professors’ informative lectures; we have participated in learning opportunities and discussions outside the classroom to grasp the seriousness of the debt and how it affects us. Now, we are committed to channeling our education towards the situation in Washington, and have taken steps to tackle the debt ourselves. We urge you to help make our voices heard on the hill today and compromise to decrease the size of the national debt as soon as possible.
Recently with the help of our professors, peers, University Democrats, and College Republicans, we initiated a bipartisan effort to develop a compromise on the debt with students on both sides of the isle coming together. Below we present some basic tenants of the content of our discussion and ideas we formulated. We urge you to consider and expand on our basic solutions as well as encourage you to integrate them on the hill in a bipartisan manner:
· Reform social security and Medicare to make these programs more sustainable
· Work to increase the efficiency of the U.S. healthcare system
· Decrease spending in a responsible manner
· Tax code reform
