Sign the Petition to

United States Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights, Seth Galanter

Mr. Galanter, as new Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights, we urge you to follow the State of Oragon's lead and ban the use of American Indians as mascots in schools K-12. Evidence shows that the use of American Indians negatively impacts students that are of Indian descent and the use of American Indians reinforces negitive stereotypes that adversely affect students' rights to the highest quality learning environment possible.

Studies also show decreased achievement, self-esteem, and self-identity among American Indian students were their ancestors are used as mascots. These students deserve better, as does every studnet in our national school system.

Please ban the use of American Mascots from our schools, and let us find a mascot we can all cheers for.

Signed,

Nick Magel

The State of Oregon has done it, now the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) wants the nation to follow their leadership. The MDC recently said that the continued use of American Indian mascots is hurting student achievement. While many find these mascots offensive, this is not about that (but it could be). This petiton is about making sure all of our kids have a school to go to where they feel safe and welcomed. When they do not it's our turn to act.

The use of American Indians as mascots is impacting students whom are American Indians, and now it's our responsibility to change it.

Last year, the Oregon Board of Education banned the use of American Indian mascots in the state, now it's time for the rest of the country to follow their lead

The Depatment of Education's job is a tough one; making sure our kids get the best education possible, but this decision is an easy one. Ban these mascots and make every kid feel welcome at school and proud to cheer at the games.
