Domestic Violence occurs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can affect anyone, regardless of socioeconomic, ethnicity, race, age, religion or gender demographic. Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) is proud to have the Valley's only hospital-based domestic violence advocacy center and is committed to protecting and providing services for victims of domestic violence.Mariposa: Wings to Safety has touched the lives of over 32,300 patients since October 2005. Mariposa: Wings to Safety provides training to all Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) employees in recognizing and screening for domestic violence and sexual assault incidents among their patients and fellow coworkers. Patients receive resources and support via in-patient, out-patient and emergency department healthcare visits, during weekly support groups, through post-partum discharge planning classes, and by assistance with shelter placement and on-site orders of protection.
In 2012, 415 cases were referred to the program: 189 from our emergency department and 7 MIHS employees. Domestic Violence prevention messages are shared with 4,300 patients annually. Mariposa: Wings to Safety has 4 advocates that provide 24/7 coverage to patients at Maricopa Medical Center Inpatient, Outpatient and Emergency Department patients.
Mariposa: Wings to safety relies on grants and generous donations made through Maricopa Health Foundation in order to exist and meet its $190,000 annual operating budget. Together, they strive to help the community move toward safety for themselves and their children.
