Help us make a monumental difference in the life of a young girl from Tanzania, simply known as Bibianna. Snatched at the age of 10 her leg was brutally hacked off by machete above the knee. Although she currently has a prosthetic leg, she has outgrown it, making it difficult and painful to walk. She lives in fear that one day her attacker will return and she will not be able to run.
Over the past few years, a gruesome trend has emerged in Tanzania: organized violence against people with albinism. Albinos are being attacked, their limbs hacked off , and sometimes left for dead.
Albinism is not widely understood in Tanzania and in many cultures the condition is regarded as supernatural instead of genetic. Traditional healers have used the limbs of albinos to create "potions" that they claim will bring wealth to their clients. Limbs can be worth between $5,000 and $20,000 on the black market. In a country where the per capita income is roughly $450 per year, that is a fortune. Since December 2006, more than 50 albinos have been murdered in Tanzania, and many others have been mutilated.
Our Solution for Bibianna
The African Millennium Foundation designed Fashioning Lives Project to uplift and inspire communities. We have partnered with Dr. Spencer Doty and his company Active Live Inc., will build a new prosthetic and retrofit her leg to accommodate her growing and changing body.
We are delighted to announce that we have raised almost half of the monies necessary to bring Bibianna here to be fitted and receive the therapy for the suffering she has endured.Thank you for your support.
