HERE IS A COPY OF EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE FROM CHIEF HANDY, STATING CAPTAIN KING WILL BE CONDUCTING THE INTERNAL INVESTIGATION REGARDING THE UNLAWFUL KILLINGS OF THESE 5 PUPPIES, CONTACT HIM AND DEMAND A FAIR INVESTIGATION:

There has been a great deal of emotion in this issue on all sides. I have asked Captain Ray King from our Department to do the investigation. We do internal investigations on a regular basis and we also find fault with ourselves on a regular basis when we make mistakes. There is no reason we cannot do our own internal review. Captain King does have responsibility over the management of the Shelter but is not down there on a daily basis. He is removed enough from the situation to be objective and he is familiar enough with the industry to know what questions to ask and where to look for answers.

I am not releasing who diagnosed the animals or other details as you requested as they are part of the investigation. We cannot piecemeal out facts here and there as they may be taken or used out of context. I believe that is part of the reason why this situation base become so difficult.

In regard to your comment about transparency and working with advocates, we are always striving to improve in that area. We do work with many advocates and non profit groups now and will continue to build relationships with those who we can work with to help find homes for these animals.

As for Mr. Long and Sgt. Affrunti, they are making decisions on the fate of animals in our shelter every single day in an effort to manage the overpopulation in our City and those who we have contracts with. There is no possible way everybody will agree with every decision they make. I am confident they have the best intentions and are always working toward what they believe is best overall for all of the animals under their care. We have made many changes at the Shelter in the last year to improve policy, supervision, and create an environment where we can provide better care for the animals in our shelter and find homes for as many as possible. We have improved in our placement versus euthanasia rates and will continue in that effort until we get as close to zero as possible. We realize we are not perfect and will keep trying to improve everyday.
Thank you for your concern and help with our pet population.
