In April 2007, the Federal Communications Commission delivered to Congress a Report
recommending that the television industry voluntarily commit to reducing the amount
of such programming viewed by children. The Commission also suggested
that Congress consider enacting legislation that would better support
parents’ efforts to safeguard their children from such objectionable
Since that time, nothing has been done and the F.C.C. has no authority to do anything. Violent programming is easily accessible by young children all day long and throughout the afternoon and evening. Violent programming should be restricted so that it may only be shown late in the evening (after 9 p.m.) to protect children from being taught that violence is an acceptable way to resolve disputes. Watching violent programming also teaches children that violence is an effective way to accomplish goals. Watching violent programming inures children to violence
Congress must pass legislation that gives the F.C.C. rule making authority to restrict the amount of violence shown on television and to limit the hours during which such shows may be shown..

Violence in society seems to be increasing. The number of random acts of violence are going up and massacres in movie theaters, churches, and schools seem to be commonplace events. Violent programming on television is contributing to this trend. In order to reduce the amount of violence in our society we must limit access to violent programming on the air. Access to violent programming is only one factor in the epidemic of violence afflicting our nation, but it is a factor that is controllable.
Tell Congress to limit violence on television and to have that accomplished by the close of the 113th Session of Congress in 2014.
