The British Army used 1.2 million horses from the Somme to Mesopotamia. Only 62,000 came back only to be sold as horse meat or cheap labour.
War hero and brave dog remembered together at funeral. A springer spaniel who died in Afghanistan working alongside a Scots bomb disposal expert is to be remembered at his master's funeral. The dog, Theo, is said to have died of a broken heart shortly after seeing his master, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, being shot and killed.
