Empower the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House After School Program to build a more effective computer program.
Currently, the NABE has very old computers and very slow Internet access.
Students in the after school program are mostly middle and high schoolers. There are approximately 20 students served daily and around 30 students total in the program.
They are just beginning a program called EPGY (Education Program for Gifted Youth), associated with Stafford (http://epgy.stanford.edu/). The program makes math fun and easy to learn through games and short lessons. It allows students to move through concepts at their own pace. The students like the program but cannot progress efficiently due to slow Internet access and dysfunctional hardware.
With laptops (that can be locked up) and Increased bandwidth, the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House can enable these students to achieve on their own, rather than depending on school lessons and at-home resources (both of which are not available or up to standard).
Assuming that each laptop will cost $300, the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House hopes to buy at least 10 new computers, spending $3,000 on new laptops.
For new bandwidth, PHNH will need to spend another $1,000 per year to increase bandwidth in the space. For five years of increased bandwidth, PHNH is seeking $5,000.
In total, $8,000 will GREATLY enable the students to reach greater goals and to learn the power of computers that they currently cannot experience.
