The young people at The Brotherhood/Sister Sol need your support!!

Like many young African American and Latino youth who live in low income communities, the young people who participate in The Brotherhood/Sister Sol (Bro/Sis) programs face a myriad of oppositions – overcrowded schools, unstable family lives and lack of access to resources that many take for granted.  At the "Brownstone" - our Bro/Sis home - on 143rd street in Harlem, members have a safe and nurturing environment; a place where they can express themselves emotionally and creatively; a judgment free zone where they can grow individually and receive the support they need to navigate through the challenges of young adulthood.

Last year, more than 350 young people benefited from our programming.  Through our multi-layered service options children can join our After School Program or After School Teen Enrichment Program, filled with arts and cultural learning opportunities.  From the day a child walks through our doors, we begin to instill in them a sense of pride and purpose. We focus on issues such as educational achievement, sexual responsibility, sexism and misogyny, social justice, and global awareness.

BHSS is dedicated to developing Black and Latino youth into empowered critical thinkers and positive community influences.

Thank you for doing your part to help us nurture artists, political activists, pioneers, teachers, poets, critical thinkers…leaders!

Below are the inspirational words of our alumnus Frank Lopez, award-winning filmmaker and poet:

"It has been eleven years since I first stepped through the doors of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol...It was here that I unearthed so much of what it means to be a man, a brother and a leader, digging deep within myself and taking time to grow in honor of my gentle spirit and love for humanity...I felt proud to be me."
