It is time for all of us to open our eyes to what is happening to the sick and imprisoned. Poor medical care would be an immeasurable understatement. Recently, my Mother passed from lung cancer in prison, three months before her release date. She was there for a probation violation on a non-violent drug charge.
Then came all of the hoops that we had to jump through to try to get her compassionate release. She had been given four months. When she passed, we still hadn't finished the process. She could have died peacefully, at home, like all who are imprisoned and dying should. Death is not something you can police; it is unjust and unnatural. I live every day with the guilt that I promised my Mother I would bring her home, and that I feel I didn't do enough, and that isn't fair either. Stop making us jump through hoops to get our most beloved home, who are dying and clearly cannot break a law, much less get out of bed.
We also petition that you change your current State prisons laws on compassionate release in VA....which are NON-EXISTENT.
Do you even realise how much money you're spending on keeping these people in prison, who as I said before, cannot even get out of bed, much less break a law? Aren't you guys trying your damndest to save money on this?
So why? For what? The only reasons I can think are masochistic and inhumane.
Set them free.
