Dear Admins of Facebook,
To provide some balance we would like to request the continued existence of Controversial Humour pages.
Humour takes many forms, and laughing is central to being human. Laughing can relieve stress, makes us happier, help us come to terms with difficult and upsetting events in our lives.
Naturally though, humour depends on taste and what one person finds funny, another may not.

For some, dark humour is an outlet for past hurt, an abuse they may have suffered, or a loved one lost through an illness such as cancer. For such people, this type of humour allows them to come to terms with their pain and move on with their lives.

Some people simply like crude humour - this does not make them sick, dangerous, twisted or uncaring.
Humour works through surprise and absurdity, a lot of dark and crude humour is absurd, too absurd to be taken seriously.

Most people who find such humour funny are decent, caring and considerate people who simply have a darker sense of humour than some, they would not dream of taking their jokes seriously and they would never find humour in the genuine suffering of another human being.

We hope that you can appreciate this and that you won't allow a small minority to decide how the rest of us are allowed to express ourselves.

Yours faithfully,
Gonzolio Martinez

What do you define as 'humour'? Humour takes many forms, and laughing is central to being human. Laughing can relieve stress, makes us happier, and help us come to terms with difficult and upsetting events in our lives. Naturally though, humour depends on taste and what one person finds funny, another may not. For some, dark humour is an outlet for past hurt, an abuse they may have suffered, or a loved one lost through an illness such as cancer. Some people simply like crude humour - this does not make them sick, dangerous, twisted or uncaring. Humour works through surprise and absurdity, a lot of dark and crude humour is absurd, too absurd to be taken seriously. Most people who find such humour funny are decent, caring and considerate people who simply have a darker sense of humour than some, they would not dream of taking their jokes seriously and they would never find humour in the genuine suffering of another human being, as such a person would be a sociopath. Some people go further and actively take a joke far too seriously, or even see it as their duty to remove a joke and prevent others enjoying it. These people are thankfully a relative minority, but they are a very highly vocal one - one that Facebook disproportionately panders to. Rather than simply ignore a page they don't like, they lobby Facebook to remove it simply because they do not share the sense of humour expressed on it. I'm not here to defend malicious humour, or humour that is otherwise created with the sole intention of causing distress. I'm here to hopefully show Facebook that the majority of people are able to understand a joke when they see it. Controversial Humour pages are clearly labelled and it is your choice to look at them. The people that occupy these pages have no interest in causing distress to anyone and will keep themselves to themselves if left alone. If you agree, please sign my petition and pass it on. Thank You.
